Thing 2
I finally watched the Stephen Abram video, read the blog entry by John Blyberg, and the articles from Library Technology Reports. I find it all very interesting. I also find it frustrating because I do not work in a library (I sub part-time in a public library) and reading all this makes me wish I had a librarian job full -time! I'm hoping for that some day.
I really liked Sarah Houghton's definition of Library 2.0. “Library 2.0 simply means making your library’s space (virtual and physical) more interactive, collaborative, and driven by community needs. Examples of where to start include blogs, gaming nights for teens, and collaborative photo sites. The basic drive is to get people back into the library by making the library relevant to what they want and need in their daily lives…to make the library a destination and not an afterthought.” Libraries do need to keep up with the times.
In response to Stephen's comments about making this "23 Things" a priority - I think librarians do need to take the time to learn the "new" tools that the patrons are using. It really will help with our service to patrons if we have the experience ourselves. For me personally, I need to be very careful that I do not rush through the "things" just to get them done, but really learn them.
